  1. I have only a few memories of Darmstadt. I was a military brat before I went into the Air Force. My father was stationed at CFK in the USAFSS. When going through his old military records, I found the following address for where we lived:

    Bldg 4424, Apt B-8
    Lincoln Village
    Darmstadt, Germany

I'm wondering if this this the same Lincoln Village.

  3. I lived in Darmstadt from the summer of '59 - summer of'62. In fact, the picture with the AYA in the background, the building to the right was the building I lived in. Talk about fond memories! My dad was Air Force and worked out at 6910th RGM out by Stars and Stripes. What great years those were. Didn't realize it at the time, but certainly do now.

  7. I lived in Darmstadt from 78 to 80.

We were at Bldg 4438, Apt C-6. There was a German store right across the street from us and I used to go in there and look at all the lead soldier molds they had.

I remember waiting for the bratwurst and ice cream trucks to come around. So good! Pistachio ice cream on a shell shaped cone!

    1. My family was there in 1971 to 1974 or 1970 to 1973 something like that. We lived in Santa Barbara Village off of Heidelburg Strasse...When we first got there we didn't like it and were always taking about "Can't wait to get to the USA..When we finally did get back to USA we were depressed. We were asking my Dad can he get orders to go back to Germany. The Fruit Man would come into the neighborhood and get out of his truck ringing a bell. saying "apples ,cherries, strawberies, oranges" he also had Gummy Bears, the cocoa - cola gummies, hard candy, all kinds of delicious stuff...and BEER... Nowhere else in the world that I have ever been to would do this. If my Dad had finished his crate of beer had all the bottles back in the crate,,he could leave the crate on the front door step and the Fruit Man would leave a full case and come back later for payment... I really loved the friends and the Germans culture .Totally Awesome ..!

  11. I also lived in Lincoln from 76-84 in 4439 B-6. Attended Elementary and Junior High there before Frankfurt High. My parents recently went back to visit Darmstadt and updated me: The entire housing area is fenced/gated off, vacant, and dark. I remember it fondly as a very vibrant community and would like to remember it that way too.

  16. 69-72, 4412 A-1, Darmstadt Elementary School. I was there last year, fenced and gated, no access even with a CAC card. Even the base was closed, I remember the walk from the village to the base being much farther than it really was!!

  17. 1972 - 1975 Lived in 442? apt A4, to the right of the building that stood across the street directly in front of the school. Very close to the AYA building and the little German house / store where we bought bakery items and a sort of dried strawberry snack (anyone know what that was called?) I also remember the daily soft drink and ice cream vendors. Also, sneaking with friends to the woods on the edge of the housing area to watch trains pass. In addition to walking to CFK, family would sometimes take the trolley to Eberstadt to the pool. Wasn't Frankenstein's castle nearby? By the way, Dad was a first sgt. with the 94th engnr bn, at Ernst Ludwig Kaserne. Recently found that the 94th is now stationed at Ft.Wood MO. Really had a wonderful time. Thanks for reminding me!

  22. I was at CFK in 2007-2008 when they were already closing down or reducing many services. It was sometimes like a ghost town but it had its share of things going on. I was a Military Police officer and we would patrol CFK, Lincoln Village, St. Barbara, Langen, Griesheim Town Housing, Start and Stripes, Kelley Barracks.... the whole entire Darmstadt community. It's fun to see some pictures on here from all the places I used to patrol on a daily basis. Too bad it shut down.

  27. Beautiful photos. Absolutely beautiful. My heart aches for this place so much despite the fact I know there is nothing left but memories there in Lincoln Village. Lived there from late 99 into 2000-2003's Christmas Eve. In the span of the 4 years I lived there, it started with resistance which ended up becoming a deep, unfathomable longing for a community I'd not felt so much kinship and close knit ties since then. I could honestly care less for my high school experience while living in Germany, but LIVING in Germany was a whole other story. I miss the seasons, the weather, the people, the food, the long walks through the forests and that path leading up to Darmstadt CFK as well as periodically stopping by the Santa Barbara community where I knew some of my other friends lived. Most of all I miss that baseball field, that very same one shown in the photos, where I spent countless hours of my summers sitting inside of, watching the clouds because it would be just that beautiful to be outside for. I've so many memories I'm glad I made there and even a few people who I still keep in touch with as some of my closest friends to this very today. As I mentioned, there's nothing left there despite my longing to go back even if just to look at the place one last time... it's weird looking at those photos because EACH. AND EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of those photos tells a personal story from some sort of third person perspective of what I was doing, exactly where and how I felt in each one of those frames. Surreal. Truly, surreal.

My name is Arthur Gardner of Building 4424, Apt. C-4 (1999-2003). I was a Darmstadt/Lincoln Village military brat who at the age of 14 up till 17 lived in a place that will forever remain in my mind, my heart and my dreams. Many other people can have their paradise... for a moment, I think I lived mine in this very place, and I wouldn't change it any other way. It's weird to see the place closed down, overgrown and frankly forgotten. I miss it so much and I'm sure alot of other people I knew back in the day feel the exact same way. Y'all know who you are if you read this.

  29. We lived at Lincoln Village Sept 1976 - 1979. My husband workd at Kelly Barracks. Our apartment was 4402-C, but can't remember the apartment number, it was on the third floor. Our neighbors were the Tinnermans, Creeks, and Browns, but also can't recall the last names of the other soldiers in our stairwell. I remember Christmas, decorating our stairwell, sipping hot red wine with cinnamon, everyone having so much fun! My sons all played ball on those ballfields and I volunteered at the DYA. This was the only apartment we ever lived in during our years in the Army and was probably the best tour we ever spent in Germany!

  30. Wow, I just happened on this site a few minutes ago. We lived in Lincoln Village from 1960-63 and then again 1968-69. We lived in 436 and in 415 A-5, I don't remember the floor or number on the first one. We played endlessly in those woods, and also in the woods between Lincoln Village and Cambrai Fritsch Caserne, that we referred to as "up post". I have many fond memories of Grades 1-4 and then 9th Grade at Darmstadt American School. A certain Roger Stowell had been my math teach at Frankfurt Junior High in 1966-67, he later got into trouble and is now in prison. He was Asst Principal in Darmstadt. I was there this past January during a trip to see friends in Belgium. I walked all the way from my hotel near the Bahnhof to Lincoln Village in most of a foot of snow. How we loved playing the snow back then, what a gas. And the German gardens over the fence, the train tracks back behind the area where the carnivals set up, and the firing range on the other side of the tracks where the Americans took firing practice. Quite an idyllic life for a grade schooler then. I brought back a pine cone from one of the big pines in the woods, and plan to see if I can get it to germinate. My Dad was also USAFSS and in the 6910th, his name was Oliver Wickey. Both my parents are gone now. It was a very wistful trip to see the place in January. It is all fenced off now as the city of Darmstadt tries to find a buyer, the place looked like it was still in good shape. I saw quite a few upgrades that must have happened after we left. I asked the caretaker's kids if I could go in, I still speak fairly good German, but was told they didn't let anyone in anymore. At the end of my afternoon of nostalgia, I took the streetcar from the stop right at the foot of the hill that goes up post. If anyone was there at the same time as me, please get in touch on Facebook, you can find me under Doug Wickey. Thanks!

  38. I lived in Darmstat from about 1994 to 1998; ages 4 through 8. It will always be a part of me. It is where I learned to ride a bike, rollar skate, its where my brother was born, where I first went to school, where me and my firends ran wide in the forest. It's been almost 13 years since we moved back to the states, but there are still days when I feel almost homesick for it. It was a wonderful place to be a kid.

P.S. to Annoymus from July 26, 2010 if I have my timeline right, you and I went to the same school for about a year, just different grades.

I lived near the playground and learned to ride a bike on the road around the Power House. I loved the Carnivals in the huge field, taking walks through the woods with my father and siblings, the candy truck (chocolate cigarette anyone?), bratwursts, nutcrackers, and fries! I remember going to the DYA and Halloween was off the chain, kids everywhere trick or treating! So many fond memories.

  42. Our Dad was in the Signal Corp stationed in Darmstadt during the winter of 1959 to June 1963, we moved to Lincoln Village 4421 Apt C-3 Oct 1960 across from the school.

I have memomries of our mother being a homeroom mother with the 4th grade class taught by 50+ female who wore a gym whistle to control the class..Remembering my 3yr sister making a comment to her during the Halloween party asking why she blew her whistle all the time was she a MP. Teacher called her a nosey brat and mother should have taught her better manners..Mom stopped being a homeroom Mother soon afterward.

5th grade memory, my 2 friends
and myself got a failing grade for a prehistoric diarama we had to create in a shoebox with clay and natural items, rocks, moss and such. Reason, we included cavemen and dinosaurs in the same scene (Parents to the rescue, I remember getting a passing grade of C)..

During the 5th & 6th grade I was a safety patrol boy on the corner by the school gym and caddie corner across from the AYA..I normally stayed on patrol later until my sister and the neighbor girl finished ballet class..

The picture of the Baseball dugout brought back the memory of when our Dad and Capt friend of his helped in the reconstruction in the spring of 1961 still looks the same after 40 plus years. What memories...

Does anyone remember what year Billy graham was at the base chapel...and...the scouting group called the Royal Ambassadors "A FRIEND OF MINE AND MYSELF WERE SENT HOME FROM CAMP FOR BEING HOMESICK"

My creepiest memory was going to the base theater and seeing a double feature of 13 Ghost and Psycho with 2 friends and walking back through the woods that night..Every noise was a reminder of a ghost or killer..We actually ran scared back to the village.

As Mother said, " You Boys are lucky you weren't kidnapped BY a STILL PRACTICING NAZI, when coming back from those kind of movies" ("Oh" brother!!!)

WHAT MEMORIES WERE HAD THEN !!!

Remember downstairs neighbors Febra & Felicia, Felicia played barbies w/me:)Also remember walkin across the tracks and up the hill w/"black forest" on either side to get up post to the movies, EVERY saturday..quarter went far back then lol... I also remember the craziest swimmin pool off post..it was built on a hillside and the deep end wall was "glass" so was like seeing a human aquarium and there was a cafe there and you could buy ice cream etc.

Indeed, it was (and still is !) a great place. Pity it didn't have a PX. Now it's empty and nobody knows what's going to happen with all those buildings.
I'll try to keep you updated on the future of Lincoln Village and I really appreciate all your comments.

I grew up in Lincoln Village 74 - 77, lived in building 4405 C-6. I had four brothers and we had tons of frends to hang out with. The DYA always had something going on, I was a cheerleader and played softball, my brothers played baseball, football and basketball. We always had special Christmas programs at school. 52. My Dad was a Sgt with 7th Evac from summer '68 to end of '70. Some of the best times of my life. My mother was AYA director. We lived caddy-corner from the school – I think it was 4425 A3 – on the corner of Franklinstrasse and Einsteinstrasse. When we first got there we lived in temporary quarters in one of the buildings across from the junior high, 4423 I think. I was in Little League at the baseball field when it had the cool green wooden grandstand. Played in the district playoffs there. Played football at the new field in '70 that barely had grass on it. Ran laps up the hill at the Four fields during football practice. Raided the German Garden. Got gummi and sour sticks at the Candy Store on Heilderberstrasse. Walked home from movies at CFK through the woods even though I wasn't supposed to. And, sorry to say, threw rocks through the windows of the little German store in the middle of the village where we got limonade. Ate pizza at, I think the name was Sorrento's. I was in sixth grade in the annex buildings behind the school. I should remember more teachers but I can recall the beloved Frau Zilch, Miss Schramm with whom I had much trouble, Miss Harden for History And I think the principal was Mr. Stohl. Watched the Comets at Memory Field while my Dad drank beer on Rummel Hill and he and the other sergeants would march opposing strikeout victims back to the dugout. I could go on and on. Great memories.

  53. Lived there twice, the first time 60-63 and then again from 66-69. The first time lived in 408-C6 (by the woods and in 412 on the second floor. The second time was a blast riding the bus to FHS,AYA dances, and playing Fussball at Umberto's upstairs while yes, having a couple of beers. D'stadt will always be remembered as the best of times and good friends. It is sad to see it abandoned and no sounds of laughter and good times.

Moving to Darmstadt felt like a punishment. Anyway, I had fun there and it did feel like home after a year. Typical Army Brat experience! --Dave

  57. I cannot believe this is actually a blog (much to my delight)! I lived in Lincoln Village - 4438 B4 from 1971 - 1973. My best friend was Lizzy and she lived above us in B6. Just the other day I was showing picutures to my daughter and thought I would "google earth it". From the satellite it looks unchanged - the photos on the blog have brought back so many pleasant memories! It looks as though Brian lived in our unit. I don't know how the units are maintained, but in my bedroom the wood floors are in a herringbone pattern and I was able to pull up many of the boards before my parents busted me.

  59. I lived at 4426 apt a-1. I cant believe there are so many of us with such good memories of living in lincoln village. I remember the baseball games sponsored by the dya. I remember the "egg lady" and her snacks and the "beer man" that came a couple of times a week. My parents would buy the lemonade and beer from him. I went back several years ago and everything seemed so much smaller than i remembered. Such great times....

  61. I had the pleasure of living in Lincoln Village on two different occasions, (1989-1991) and (1994-1995- we then moved to Wiesbaden). My apt was 4403 apt. a-3 and 4406 apt. c-4. I absolutely loved Lincoln Village and all that came with it, from the candy lady in the white van and the beer man that came on Monday afternoons to the precious lifelong friendships I gained. I would love to take my kids there and show them where I practically grew up!

Hi, I'm Angela Morris (Seibold)I lived in Lincoln Village from 93-96(ages 5-8), BLDG 4433 Apt C-4. I have such great memories of that place. I used to have dreams about going back to the playground behind my building, visiting my elementary school again. I finally got the chance to go back in 2009, but I was too late. I read the school was shut down a few months before, and there was an ugly green fence around the whole building complex. Needless to say, it was a sad day. I cried.

  63. We used to call it the Ding Dong school, don't remember why. Went here from 66-69, Mr Lane & Mr Butterball where the favorite teachers. My best friends were Jimmy McBride, Don Bennett, Rodney Canning...to name a few. Most of us lived in civilian housing. We were also very good friends with Louie &Mr Kaiser who lived in the german cottage in the village. Louie got married to an American girl and lives in the states somewhere, Kaiser (aka Pete Eckardt) still lives in that cottage. We had Great times, and parties in that village. Most of us went on to Frankfurt or to some other american school in Germany. A lot of are still in contact after all these years, friends for life. Not many can claim that achievement...Darmstadt ueber Alles!

  70. My maiden name is Sonja Liveoak. I lived in Darmstadt's Lincoln Village and attended Darmstadt Elementary School from 1st thru the summer before 6th grade, so roughly from late 1994 until summer of 2000. I've been trying to find old friends and teachers will no avail. I absolutely loved Darmstadt, with some of my best memories being from there, as well as Leighton Barracks, the Military base in Wurzburg. It breaks my heart to see these places I grew up being completely abandoned and overgrown. Speaking of which, does anyone else remember the creepy old abandoned building/factory over near the elementary school? I remember all the ghost stories and all of the dares to sneak in, lol. But no one ever did!

I lived at 456 or 345A Santa Barbara Village across the street from Robin Leake. I have great memories of picking blackberries and raspberries in the forest, learning how to bake homemade pies, hearing a French horn player next to the railroad tracks in the forest, the German carnivals, the "coal man", road trips though-out Europe and sooo much more!. I attended elementary school in both Lincoln and Jefferson Village. Does anyone have any pics available of Santa Barbara Village or the adjacent forest? Miriam Mustelier in Austin TX

  85. Hello Everyone.
I lived on Cambrai Fritsch Kaserne from 1988 till 1990. I married a school teacher and moved off post, but remained at Darmstadt, ETS'd and worked on Nathan Hale Depot till May 2008. Yes, I was there 20 years and worked in the Housing Office. I was in and around all the Housing Areas, Lincoln Village, Jefferson Village, Santa Barbara, Griesheim, along with our leased housing areas as well. When my wife transferred, I stayed in the BEQ in Griesheim. I have many great memories living and working in all the housing areas.

  86. I also have memories of Darmstadt, (Lincoln Village" I live there '69-74. I think it was 4404 c-6 not sure. Played football one season, (Steelers) I remember one player got the nick name "Tree" he ran into a tree our first day of practice. Tuned out to be one of our best players. I remember Frau Lewis and Mr. Bledsoe.
Attended the elementary school. Had an older sister who was kind of a B word. There was a family who moved in on the first floor. Mixed race couple Patty, older daughter and twin brothers Ricky and Ralphie, Patty and Tanya were friends. I had a brother a year older than me and a younger brother 2 years younger. I wasn't a great student, well known or liked. My mother married the American Service man (step father) he was a very brutal man and beat me relentlessly, that's why some memories are not as great as those you guys had. It's not to say I don't have good memories. I danced my first dance with a girl at the AYA, (my little brother had a crush on a girl named Patience Perry, my fondest memories was playing outside with the group of kids Mr. Ingalls would gather together to play softball and things. Because of my home life was so horrible most of the kids my age 8-12 had their friends and I was too insecure assert myself and become part of group. I did have a few friends, Ricky and Ralphie, a few more I can't remember the names of. Wish I could. You guys are the only reason I survived the hell I lived through. (No one knew) I think older sister finally said something, I remember a counselor calling me in, inspected bruises and scratches York subjected me to, but nothing ever came of it. That's when I realized it would never stop and I could go to no one for help. (Why most of the kids never really knew me.) again, even with all that I tear up when I think of the friends I did have. The teachers I likes and those who never understood me. Now that I am older, I realize that all those years there started me on the path to who I would become. I would not change any of that or it would change who I became. I thank Lincoln Hights and all of those who lived there when I did. Oh, the winters! I miss them so much. All the snowmen and angles. The HUGE snowballs we would make, would take 6 of us to push it. There was one day, me and two friends started building a snowman, lost all track of time, by the time we finished, the school day was over. Got in big trouble for that, but is one of my best memories.

  87. Lived in Lincoln Village from 74-77. Went to k-3rd grade. I remember the elementary school was on the nearby base. We had to eat lunch in the attic. I remember when the movie Jaws came to the post theatre and how long the line was. We lived in the 3rd building on the right. We played on the "Big Hill" behind the building. I am sure it was not that big. But that is what we called it. Most importantly, my father's name was SSG Hicks. He coached DYA teams. I remember a football team and a basketball team. I think I remember the Rams or Vikings. Iremember they won a big game in Baumholder in the fog. I was young and cant remember much. Thanks

  88. Wow. So many memories. BEQ in Griesheim even. Our first housing in Germany was across from the BEQ in the Siedlung that was basically a carbon copy of one Lincoln Village building. I remember the balcony, playing with coal after delivery out back, exploring the woods a little - and finding a spent cartridge and evidence of a bunker in the woods. We moved onto the economy from then on, but I spent countless time with friends in Lincoln Village. I was there from 64-68, then again 74-78 when I went to Frankfurt (FAHS). Started school and went through 2d or 3d grade at Cambria Fritsch Kaserne before going stateside for a few years. Someone mentioned Mrs Liebig - I remember her as a favorite teacher (2d grade) even if she called me a "leather neck" for rough-housing with a buddy when we supposed to be going downstairs to assemble outside in an orderly fashion. Cobblestones everywhere. Streetcars, moped (mofa), and my brother having a car for a while - there was a lot to do. Eberstadt and Griesheim pools, Biebesheim lake,...

The ski trip we all took to Chiemsee in 6th grade, eating brats and pumpernickel and ice cream at the famous pool in Eberstadt, snow on the ground almost all winter. I spent a lot of time at the AYA and I loved when the carnivals came to town! They were just down the hill from me and I helped out with the pony rides.
