These are great photos of the Cambrai, the US Air Force was a big part of this Darmstadt installation. It is a bit scarey to think of the empty state of these places that held so much activity over so many years. So many lives touching, friendships made, bonds cemented both between Airmen and Soldiers but between all and the German nationals. Sweet memories. Frankenstein's castle is near this installation, as well as, what we called, Rapunzel's tower in the Odenwald. Awesome stuff and great work, really good photos. Thanks you. Gerry Spencer
Indeed, it's pretty depressing seeing all this places empty. Same for Lincoln Village, which I am planning to visit soon.
Actually, what impressed me the most were the silent playgrounds all over the recently closed housing areas I've visited (St. Barbara, Bad Nauheim, Roman Way, Langen, Cardwell Village and many, many other).
You feel indeed the emptiness when kid's noise is gone.
To answer the question about Hanau, yes, I am planning to take a tour of all former installations there.
Will take, though, some time until I am able to upload pictures of Hanau, as I promised my readers I will complete the Frankfurt housing area gallery first.
Thank you for you patience and I'm looking forward for you to come back. Comments and suggestions are welcome anytime.
I took Pics of Cambrai too in Feb. this year. The Main Gate was closed and the took away the Cambrai Sign at the Entrance already. I realized the Silence too, unbelievable....it brought tears to my Eyes to see this Dead Place / Ghost Town. I was happy to attend the Bowling Alley closing last Year July. Let me know if you need more pics.....i got some
I know this is an old post but if you get this I would love some pics of Cambria! Was there from 91'-93'. Rounsvilletimothy@gmail.com if you still have them.
What a great job you're doing putting these photos on the web for everyone to see. It is so sad to see these military communities empty now. I lived in Hanau in the 1970s. Would love to see photos of Pioneer again. Keep up all the good work you're doing, all us ex military and army brats really appreciate it. Thanks from an army brat.
Hey i was stationed at CFK during 1998-2000 and those were some of the best years of my life! These pics are only a shell of a place that was once swarming with life, love, family, friends, parties, and just overflowing with good times! I met some of the most amazing people - both military and local - and made lifelong friends here - even MET MY WONDERFUL WIFE HERE <3! The Darmstadter, The Rainbow Club, the bowling alley....yo, Cambai-Frisch Kaserne is foreverrrr!!!!! R.I.P. King Mata! All my peeps, stay tight and always write. get at me! :-) -Will Johnson
I was stationed at Camrbai form 87-90. I visited there later in 99, but to see the photos and the emptiness were more emotional than I would have imagined.
I met my best friend ever while serving in HHC 11th Sig. What a great time we had at the bowling alley and who could ever forget the drunken times we spent at the Rainbow club. While there I couldnt wait to get home, I would never have thought how much I'd like to go back and spend some time with great soldiers that were in 11th Sig with me.
I remember going to that church! How nice to see it again if only in a picture! I was young but I loved Germany and was very sad when we had to leave. Some day I am coming back!
Argh.... more memories. lol. The Rainbow Club on a Friday.... Never missed it. It was the place to go for me after Aschaffenburg closed up. BTW - the Bavarian NCO Club and the Gatsby's were "da bomb". Wish I could turn back time. I hope that you will one day be able to post piccies from some or even all Aschaffenburg Barracks. Would make my day for real! Thank you for all your work and effort, it's highly appreciated!
Thank you for posting these pics! I was stationed there 96-99 when the Rainbow Club was the spot, especially if you liked to fight. They had "Smugglers" and Black Sounds. Soldiers would shop in the Luiseplatz or hit up Frankfurt for the "poof houses." I miss getting my shot of Ramozotti and lasagne to-go at the little Italian restaurant by the back gate. Remember the Schwimmbad parties or the Deutsches+ Amerikaniches fest? I truly enjoyed Darmstadt.
The last Post is pretty funny :) Yep, the Pizza Place was open up to the very End.....almost all Soldiers i knew loved to hang out there. Smugglers tough closed a long time ago. I´m still looking for People/Soldiers who have Pictures of Smugglers or Rainbow Parties.....hit me up: skyholgi@gmx.de
Thanks Holger
PS: I just got a Mail from Charlie Wilson, who was living on Cambrai when he was 6 Years Old. I´m gonna sent him some Pics.
And yes, this Site here is amazing and i´m not even glad to see all the Pics and Memories, but Soldiers coming here, posting their Comments and Memories too! This is a good way to use the Internet these Days, without it....there would be no such thing like this great Blog !
I was stationed at Cambrai-Fritsch from 1989 until 1992. Those photos brought back some long forgotten memories. I never thought to take photos of the Kaserne while I was there - too busy checking out all the other attractions.
Whoever posted here and is on Facebook, join the "I was on Cambrai" Group and find former Comrads. I will put some of Pics on the Facebook-Site soon....actually some from the Gym and inside overall.
I was stationed at CFK 1969-1971 with the 93rd Signal BN. Sorry to see the place closed down. Many happy memories, I remember the tower behind the Kasern, long summer walks in the woods back there and we would actually walk all the way up to Frankenstein's castle.
As for life in the Army, the 93rd spent nearly all the time in the field, we never passed a single IG while I was there. I heard the BN commander later was removed after a nervous breakdown.
This is a nice site! Going to have to look around and remember the old Cold Warrior days.
I was posted to Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne 1954 - 1957 USAF 2nd Radio Squadron. Lived in top floor of barracks with Tower on East side of Parade ground. Our unit also occupied the 2nd barracks to the south and the HQ Building and Mess Hall on the North side. V Corp Army communicatins unit was on the West of the square. Motor pool was on the South. I have many photos inside the barracks and in the Parade Square which seems to be a parking lot now. We were a heavily armed NSA Intelligence gathering squadron with our operations out west of the city. Very much liked Darmstadt, Frankfurt people during these reconstruction days. Have photos of Darmstadt then also. I will post some if I can get some e-mail addresses. ><>
I was there from 91-93. I worked at the Insurance Company outside the Gate of CFK. My husband worked on Kelley Kaserne. These were the best of times. I remember the Rainbow Club. I even spent time at the Rod and Gun Club. I actually lived in Weiderstadt during this time. I am planning on going back sometime.
God, this breaks my heart. I was a gen. mech. with 440th Sig Bn at CFK from '94 to '97. We lived in Lincoln Village and my son attended school there (my daughter was too young still). I had good times and bad times and couldn't wait to leave. But I have missed it. I kept a map of Darmstadt posted on my wall for several years and would look at it, point out places for my kids. We'd remember riding the 'strasse, walking up the hill along the wooded path to go to Sight and Sound or the PX. On the weekend I'd get together with my friends and hit the Rainbow Club for line dancing. My favorite doner kebab place was a ten minute walk from home. For special occasions we'd all go walking into Luisenplatz, and stop on the way back at that little underground Mexican restaurant. Can't believe it's all gone.
I was stationed at Ramstein 64-66 with the 2874th GEEIA and was TDY to the Darmstadt-Greisheim area- installing antennas - we were housed at Cafe Schneider in Darmstadt. Every day we spent some time at Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne. Met Beseball Hall of Famer Sam Rice's daughter, Christine, there -she worked at the Service Club. The pics bring back so many wonderful memories and evoke some strong emotions. Thanks you so much. I hope to return to Germany soon to visit the locations where our work took us. Eric Pellegrino Canton, NY
My father was the chaplain at the Community church in Darmstadt-Cambrai-Fritch during the middle eighties. We had a great time living in such a tight-nit community. We lived in Santa Barbara and I attended school out side of Darmstadt. I sure miss riding the train into town and down into Ebersdadt and Phundestadt to the pools.
I lived in Lincoln Village from 72-76 and remember walking up to Cambrai for the cheap movies, good pizza, i was in my teens but will never forget wanting to go home when i first arrived and my parents forcing me on the plane to go back home, i had friends in not only Lincoln Village but also Jefferson Village and Santa Barbara Village where all the Officer housing was, I played many years for the Darmstadt Trojans Basketball team in the Cambrai gym and also in the Kelly Barracks gym, we travelled all over Germany, my fondest place was playing in the Bubble gym in Fulda, I was with the AYA in Lincoln Village and they kept us busy in sports, i remember going to the pool in Eberstatt which had a 10 meter platform with a window cafe below and we used to terrorize the people eating watching us in the pool, i remember the four fields in Lincoln Village and getting in fights witht he German boys protecting our turf and raiding the berry bushes on the outer territories of the four fields. My football and Basketball coach was an MPI who made sure we were protected if we got out of hand, he was the best, my dad worked for Stars and Stripes in Greisheim and we had all the benefits of a miltary family which allowed us to live in Lincoln Village, we used to go to Ramstein for easter and Thanksgiving since they had the best spread but always worried the bader meinhoff gang would blow it up which they were succesfull days after we were there one time, it was a little dangerous at that time being the cold war and german civilians sick of all the us military all over, i remember ice skating at rhein mein outside during christmas, i remember living at the Atlas Hotel until our Lincoln Village unit opened up, my best friends dad worked at USAMPOR The US army Maintenance plant in Ober Ramstadt, he used to let us weld our bikes. sorry im just firing memories obviusly fresh still after 34 years, i will give more later, how sad to see it empty. my mom would invite the single soldiers over for christmas and thanksgiving and make them homemade meals they were very happy and always nice.i miss it.
I can't say thank you enough. I lived in Lincoln Village from 93-95.. we moved there after closing Stuttgart down. I was heartbroken to leave Germany.. it was one of what sadly, was very few truly happy times I've had.. At 36, I am not old, but I am disabled and I look back, and I think of how much I took for granted. I am divorced now from my then husband, but I can honestly say, I wish I could revisit that time again. We were poor, as all jr enlisted are, but we were happy. I don't miss him, but I miss Germany, and probably, more than anything, the innocence of being a young Army wife in a place of safety. I feel the same way when I watch "Army Wives"... the military is an amazing mini-society, where you know that others get you, and what's going on in your world, kind of automatically. Sadly, my divorce was not friendly and my ex refused to give me my pictures of our life there.. So thank you. You are giving me back something I lost, even though I am in tears having just learned that it's all closed. Somehow, it wasn't so sad when I thought people still lived their lives there.. now I just feel... old. But thank you, it's bittersweet.. rather appropriate I guess..
I was stationed at CFK in 1971 in the 7th Evac Hospital. I had a 1953 BMW motorcycle and really enjoyed riding all over, at least when it was warm enough. I was there for the "Darmstadt 52" drama and loved to go to the "Happy Cat" club and the Jugenstil museum. I even made a few trips to the "Underground", a German club in a cellar downtown. My friend had an apartment in Eberstadt and we would all go there and hang out on the weekends. Great memories.
Underground? No stranger to that place either. I knew so folks in the 7th Evac and possibly your friend in Eiberstadt. I owned a BSA 441 in 70-71 and have been riding BMW's for years. I bet we met back in the day, did you know Blade or Tree? Small world?
I rememebr attending Mata's funeral. There from Jan 99 to Mar01. Never knew the guy as I was in the barracks next door. I met my wife there. i was in B440th, was 1st Sgt Quintero's driver as well as thetwo Cptns. Both of them at some point. i remember the Thousand Pardons, the Halloween runs, the Frankenstein runs where we would do all the signing up so the rest of the battalion could do the run while we had the weekend off to do our own thing. I remember chewing out some Sgt (named Clarence) at the Robin Hood pizza place because he screwed up my order and then my platoon backed me up by all of us ordering ther same thing until he told us the pizza place was closed at like 3 in the afternoon. I remember when they finally opened the taco Bell and everyone showed up for free food, "Oh, yeah, I'm with the last guy, gimme 10 tacos and a bean burrito and a large drink!" I remember when most of the post went to Poland and all the containers for the upper officers had fidelio on the sides of their gear because some goof off had just seen eyes wide shut so it became the public password joke. So many nights spent waiting in the motorpool for ComSec to be turned in. So many nights spent waiting in line for armory checkin! Makes me wanna go back sometimes.
Really appreciate this site. Brings back so many wonderful memories. As I sit here drinking a beer from my HofbrauHaus mug and listening to "A GI's Germany," I wish I could relive this time of my life. Thank you for bringing these memories to all of us who served in Germany. Eric Pellegrino Canton, NY
Stationed at Cambrai Fritsch for 6910th RGM from 10/1962 until 10/1965. Am looking for interaction to develop more info for a Google Map Germany 1962-1965 with annotations for folks stationed at Cambrai. Had previous problem losing an attempted long post. Hope this one goes through so I can add back in more information. Interested in web links, photos, etc. Brad Mandell, Leesburg, VA
I was in A Co., 11th Sig., 32nd AADCOM, 1976 - 1977. I have great memories of this time in my life, (probably as I was 18 / 19 yrs. old).
If David Briggs, Mark Caico, Robert Sneed, Michael Triplett, Jim Garrison, Mike Edmondson, Paul Smith, Diane Haser-Harris, or others who knew me, see this, please post. Tks Jon Saul
Hey there! I was stationed with the Military Police Platoon from 89-92. Had so many great times in Darmstadt and met some really great friends, sure do miss those days and even more so the people.
Had some great times in Darmstadt, I actually worked in the officers club. My husband and i lived off base in the military housing. He was in the 440th. Hung out many times at the rainbow till 4:00 in the morning, just hanging out. Had some wonderful friends, Rob,his wife Karen, daughter Amber and son Robbie. Laura and Tony Gutierrez, Bill and Belinda King, of course we have all lost contact now but we had some awesome times then. So sorry the see and hear its all shut down..thnks Deb Hernandez
I was stationed at CFK from '59-61 while attached to the 6981st RGM. These were 2 of the best years of my life and an eye-opener for a wet-behind-the-ears twenty-one-year-old airman. Because we reported directly to the Air Force Security Service, we were able to get 4 day passes every sixteen days. Consequently, we were able to travel to Holland, France, Austria, and Switzerland. What an experience!
I was stationed with the 440th as a WAC from Dec 73 to July 74, but stayed on through Mar 77 with my soldier husband. We lived in Eberstadt then Greishiem until we got quarters at Lincoln Village. We never bought a car and I dearly loved walking, riding the Strauss or bicycling everywhere. Fond memories. What a beautiful place on God's green earth. Thank you.
On Facebook there a a couple of Pages dedicated to Cabrai-Fritsch Kaserne (CFK) and I created one several years ago for 440th Sig Bn. Good info as you may compare notes, see other photos and chat with other folks stationed there. There is at least one photo from the 1940's of the post office when it was still under Nazi reign.

Thanks for the memories. My family and I were there from 1978 to 1981. We lived in housing right across from the Chapel. That picture looks like the Chapel and the building we lived in. My wife of 35 years died 1n 2006. We had a good time while there. We were happy to leave and come back to the states. After seeing your pictures, I can say with a kind heart, I miss that place. Thanks for the memories.
Hi, I was stationed at CFK from 1953 to 1957. Great times and greater friends. Air Force, 2nd RSM. Putting on the years now, but terrific memories. Thanks for your effort.
Hi my family and i were stationed here 04/07 my husband, our kids and i were on a afn commercial that was about the 440th welcome home ceremony for the troops by brain algood of anyone by any chance has this video please let me know. Thanks!!
I was here from 82 to 87 and it was a great experience that I wouldn't trade for anything. 19 years old in a completely different place. Plenty of money in my pocket with a Mark rate that was way up there. 20 bucks would give you dinner and your evenings worth of beers!! Sad to see it in decay. I was in C. 44 right next to Geno's out the back gate. Geno made a hell of a jaeger schnitzel!
I was with the 7th evac from 72 to 74. I was in PLX with John Montgomery and Duarte. I still stay in touch with a bunch of the guys and see Stites, Pickering, Cowperthwaite and Schaudies. I miss those long summers at Bickenbock lake and working as a lab tech at the 4th Gen Dispensary. Thanks for the page, signed, Mike Richards
Hi all! My dad was assigned to the 22nd in 2004 when I was 6, and around a half of a year later, he was transferred to the 440th, I think he was in the S6. We lived 8km away in Rossdorf, as there was no on-base housing. I went to Darmstadt Elementary 06-07 for third grade, and we left in 07 shortly before the 440th was discharged. I'm trying to start a page on Twitter for all you Darmstadt Elementary alumni out there. I hope to make it soon.
I was at HHB 32nd ADCOM '76-'79 working in supply. My married name was Carol Dufrane. I loved my time there and love the pics. Will try to get on the Facebook "I was on Cambrai" under Carol Pajak.Would love to hear from people that where there during that time.
Thank you for documenting this wonderful place. I spent three of the best years of my life stationed with the 6910th., USAFSS on this base. While stationed there I had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe. I also established friendships and memories that have lasted me my lifetime. I write this with a tears in my eyes knowing that what was will never be again. I thank the people of Germany for their kindness and cherish memories celebrated with them.
I was with the TADS Unit during the testing phase at the Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne in 1971. We started out with the 7th Signal but eventually was transitioned to the 93rd Signal. I remember the Rod and Gun Club and the NCO Club as well as the powdered eggs we got at breakfast most of the time. But a good tour of duty overall.
I was assigned to USMCAD 1978-81. My family and I lived in housing in front of the Chapel. I see the building where we lived in the picture. My wife died 7 years ago. I wish she could see this too. Thanks.
I was in the 440th signal BTN, CFK kaserne at 1973,1973 and 1974 HHC ,later transferred to C,CO (NEXT TO THE MOVIE_THEATRE), I was an acqaintance of HILTRUD; my friends were HERMAN WHITE, and STEPHAN STARKS(NOW DECEASED) and EDDIE(PUERTORIQUENYO) I went to see CHICAGO) the BAND, in FRANFORT with EDDIE in 1972 , we somehow were right next to the stage;Terry KATH played Guitar unbelievably on Make me SMILE" (THE SONG) and " 25 or 6 to four" (THE SONG) I later went to DARMSTADT as a civilian traveler and CAMPER; and stayed 14 straight summers (3-5 months) each time; in DARMSTADT; hanging out every day at the bowling-center , RAINBOW-CLUB, AUTO_HOBBY_SHOP, LIBRARY, and prinz-Emil park and ORANGERIE-PARK darmstadt; and ELIZABETHAN strasse aND LUISENPLATZ, ludwigshoehe AND tower/castle; der sternwart (observatory) AT TOP OF ludwigshoehe, AND MANY OTHER PLACES; DID YOU KNOW "frankensteins TOWER IS IN eberstadt; THAT TOWER WE SEE FROM cambrai fritsch kaserne AT DARMSTADT IS "ludwigs tower; i GO THERE ALL THE TIME EVEN, THIS YEAR 2014, THEY HAVE A PUB./BAR/KNEIPE,BUMSLOKAL, AND CAFE UP THERE AND FESTS AND PARTIES UP THERE ALL THE TIME; dARMSTADT (the technological city OF germany HAS IT,S OWN space_program, THEY HAVE A BILDING/CENTER/CAMPUS TOP/SECRET PLACE UP NEAR THE SUMMIT NEAR THERE AT ludwigs hoehe; BY THE WAY "hoehe" MEAND MOUNTAIN-SUMMIT AND COMMONLY CAN MEAN MOUNTAIN OR LARGE,HIGH HILL;
me and my family met a young men who was station at cambra Fritsch kaserne in 1962 he spend Christmas with us. his name was tom king he was from Chicago.always wondered what happen to him if you see this send a little note. helga
I'm David Burleigh, '81-'82, HHD 11th ADA Sig Bn with LT Liz Clepper running the barracks under Top (can't remember his name). I worked in S1 for SFC Volland. Dumbass Gornto was running the show. My roommates in the barracks were Danny White from Cleveland, and Chuck Martin from Pagosa Springs, CO.
I loved Germany, loved Darmstadt, hated the military. Not one real brain in the bunch. Any time you have an organization that promotes people into positions of authority that can't conjugate their forms of 'be' properly; I have an issue with that.
Any time you have an adult in his or her 40's, that being enlisted, catering to the needs of some ignorant 20-something, because they have bars; I have an issue with that.
Even to this day, I have yet to meet anyone with an IQ even approaching 145, let alone the 4th standard deviation. It's pathetic. Idiots in the White House, commanding idiots in the military. I weep for this country.
Anyway, if White or Martin, or anyone that remembers me wants to find me, the most reliable incomex way to hotmail find me is through that. It is sad to see CFK deprecated.
I was stationed at CFK in 67 & 68 first as a member of HQ co of the 93rd Sig Bat. Then company "C". The years have erased many memories but the few that remain are of friends and bonding. I recall most hated being in the service but the duty wasn't bad. It gave us all an opportunity to experience life away from our families and home towns. Its sad to see the photos of the place abandoned.
Hi, my name is Christine . I used to go there every weekend to hang out with the GIs ....this was back in the 80's and I'll never forget it. I was that crazy loud mouthed german. Doing the line dance , drinking Beer and just having a blast ! I am of average build, always wore a " vest & cowboy hat " ! I miss all my old buddies. Some were marines and made it a point to look after me. I think I was like 18 then.i wish I could turn back time and got everyone's contact information as I now reside in the states ( Florida ) . Perhaps god willing, I'll run into my old friends ;-)
Hi ya'll, I'm (then) PFC/SP4 Tom Meyer. I was I was stationed at HHC,93rd SigBn CFK from April 68 thru to about May 69. I worked in S4, Played Center Field softball. Had lots of time at 'Karls Gastoff' right outside the gate on the left. Played a pretty good game of Pool at the Service Club if you don't mind my saying. Left lots of friends in 1969. Remember Gary Stiglich from C Co 93rd, Pete Parente, SSG Sulzbach, James Richardson, Steve Hanold, SSG Evans, SFC Bloxom, John Varone, list goes on and on. Heck of a memory, huh? Miss a girl used to hang out with named Helga too, Chester 'Pop' Collins. Oh well, would love visit there again. Lots and lots of good times. Good job on all the photos you have amassed. Keep up the good work.
I was there in 1989-1992 while my ex was stationed there. I ran the Stars and Stripes bookstore. I remember the lady who ran the barbershop, Carol, who was from England. Good times!! Thanks for the pictures, I'm sad to see it abandoned.
I was stationed with the 93rd sig bat co c and d 1967 until September 1968 at Cambrai.I have a lot of good memories and as time passes I find that I miss my buddies and the times that we had. I was sad to see the place closed and looking so deserted. The pictures and videos did bring back memories.
Re: Camp Eschborn. I worked at the camp after it had almost completely wound down. The final activity that I was aware and part of, was the presence of a training team of GTE Corporation. The team trained soldiers of the 22nd Signal Brigade on what was then the brand-new Mobile Subscriber Equipment tactical communications network for division and corps signal networks. This activity took place in 1991. Cheers --
Posting this to see if anyone has any info On Bobby E Cooper (Robert) he was there from 60-62 in Co. D 440th Signal apo 34. Been looking for info on him for a few days. If anyone has any info please email me rcooper_2000 @ Yahoo.com I would like to find some ol buddies of his. he is not on good health at the moment would like to show him pictures or what not of that again,
I was with Det 2 of the 44th signal Bn from mid 81 to aug 84. Was a crypto repairman in support of the GTE team fielding the AN/TYC-39 tactical telephone switch and the DSTE equipment that was used for integration. Had some great times at CF and will never forget the guys and gals I worked with, am heartbroken that they are just letting it sit and decay.
Could you possibly obtain pictures from the Hanau area more particularly New and Old Argonner and Waofgang Kasernes that would be good Thank You...

I remember hiking up to Frankenstein's castle!

ReplyDeleteWill take, though, some time until I am able to upload pictures of Hanau, as I promised my readers I will complete the Frankfurt housing area gallery first.
Let me know if you need more pics.....i got some
ReplyDeleteI would mail you some, hit me up.

I know this is an old post but if you get this I would love some pics of Cambria! Was there from 91'-93'. Rounsvilletimothy@gmail.com if you still have them.
DeleteWhat a great job you're doing putting these photos on the web for everyone to see. It is so sad to see these military communities empty now. I lived in Hanau in the 1970s. Would love to see photos of Pioneer again. Keep up all the good work you're doing, all us ex military and army brats really appreciate it. Thanks from an army brat.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad someone is doing this. It's sad but fun to see former haunts. I'm waiting for A-burg.
ReplyDeleteHey i was stationed at CFK during 1998-2000 and those were some of the best years of my life! These pics are only a shell of a place that was once swarming with life, love, family, friends, parties, and just overflowing with good times!

I was stationed at Camrbai form 87-90. I visited there later in 99, but to see the photos and the emptiness were more emotional than I would have imagined.
ReplyDeleteI met my best friend ever while serving in HHC 11th Sig. What a great time we had at the bowling alley and who could ever forget the drunken times we spent at the Rainbow club. While there I couldnt wait to get home, I would never have thought how much I'd like to go back and spend some time with great soldiers that were in 11th Sig with me.
A peter stain Canbrai!
I remember going to that church! How nice to see it again if only in a picture! I was young but I loved Germany and was very sad when we had to leave. Some day I am coming back!
ReplyDeleteArgh.... more memories. lol. The Rainbow Club on a Friday.... Never missed it.
ReplyDeleteIt was the place to go for me after Aschaffenburg closed up.
ReplyDeleteThe last Post is pretty funny :) Yep, the Pizza Place was open up to the very End.....almost all Soldiers i knew loved to hang out there. Smugglers tough closed a long time ago. I´m still looking for People/Soldiers who have Pictures of Smugglers or Rainbow Parties.....hit me up: skyholgi@gmx.de

Can you get more pictures of cambrai-fritsch? I was stationed there in 1992 and I wondered if you could post more pictures. Thank you,
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at Cambrai-Fritsch from 1989 until 1992. Those photos brought back some long forgotten memories. I never thought to take photos of the Kaserne while I was there - too busy checking out all the other attractions.
ReplyDeleteI must say that I've got a lump in my throat.
Thanks for the memories.

ReplyDeleteAs for life in the Army, the 93rd spent nearly all the time in the field, we never passed a single IG while I was there.
ReplyDeleteI was there from 91-93.
ReplyDeleteGod, this breaks my heart.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at Ramstein 64-66 with the 2874th GEEIA and was TDY to the Darmstadt-Greisheim area- installing antennas - we were housed at Cafe Schneider in Darmstadt. ReplyDeleteMy father was the chaplain at the Community church in Darmstadt-Cambrai-Fritch during the middle eighties. We had a great time living in such a tight-nit community. We lived in Santa Barbara and I attended school out side of Darmstadt. I sure miss riding the train into town and down into Ebersdadt and Phundestadt to the pools.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Lincoln Village from 72-76 and remember walking up to Cambrai for the cheap movies, good pizza, i was in my teens but will never forget wanting to go home when i first arrived and my parents forcing me on the plane to go back home, i had friends in not only Lincoln Village but also Jefferson Village and Santa Barbara Village where all the Officer housing was, I played many years for the Darmstadt Trojans Basketball team in the Cambrai gym and also in the Kelly Barracks gym, we travelled all over Germany, my fondest place was playing in the Bubble gym in Fulda, I was with the AYA in Lincoln Village and they kept us busy in sports, i remember going to the pool in Eberstatt which had a 10 meter platform with a window cafe below and we used to terrorize the people eating watching us in the pool, i remember the four fields in Lincoln Village and getting in fights witht he German boys protecting our turf and raiding the berry bushes on the outer territories of the four fields.
ReplyDeleteI can't say thank you enough. I lived in Lincoln Village from 93-95.. we moved there after closing Stuttgart down. I was heartbroken to leave Germany.. it was one of what sadly, was very few truly happy times I've had..
ReplyDeleteAt 36, I am not old, but I am disabled and I look back, and I think of how much I took for granted.
Does anyone remember the name of the Chaplain for Cambrai Fritsch during the early 80's. I think he has 4-5 kids and twin girls.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at CFK in 1971 in the 7th Evac Hospital.
ReplyDeleteUnderground? No stranger to that place either. I knew so folks in the 7th Evac and possibly your friend in Eiberstadt. I owned a BSA 441 in 70-71 and have been riding BMW's for years. I bet we met back in the day, did you know Blade or Tree? Small world?
ReplyDeleteI rememebr attending Mata's funeral. I remember when they finally opened the taco Bell and everyone showed up for free food, "Oh, yeah, I'm with the last guy, gimme 10 tacos and a bean burrito and a large drink!"
ReplyDeleteI remember when most of the post went to Poland and all the containers for the upper officers had fidelio on the sides of their gear because some goof off had just seen eyes wide shut so it became the public password joke.
So many nights spent waiting in the motorpool for ComSec to be turned in. So many nights spent waiting in line for armory checkin! Makes me wanna go back sometimes.
I was stationed on CFK Jan 85-Oct 87. Married in the chapel. Daughter born in Frankfurt.
ReplyDeleteHQ 11th Sig BN det to HA 32d AADCOM. Signal office.
Wow this is truly sad. I have many fond memories of Cambrai and the 440th Signal Battalion.
ReplyDeleteI was in 440th sig a co.1989-1990 lamar dean looking for so many people
DeleteReally appreciate this site. Brings back so many wonderful memories. As I sit here drinking a beer from my HofbrauHaus mug and listening to "A GI's Germany," I wish I could relive this time of my life. Thank you for bringing these memories to all of us who served in Germany.

ReplyDeleteInterested in web links, photos, etc.

I was in A Co., 11th Sig., 32nd AADCOM, 1976 - 1977. I have great memories of this time in my life, (probably as I was 18 / 19 yrs. old).
ReplyDeleteIf David Briggs, Mark Caico, Robert Sneed, Michael Triplett, Jim Garrison, Mike Edmondson, Paul Smith, Diane Haser-Harris, or others who knew me, see this, please post. Tks Jon Saul
Hey there! I was stationed with the Military Police Platoon from 89-92. Had so many great times in Darmstadt and met some really great friends, sure do miss those days and even more so the people.
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad to see this Pictures.Wonder if somebody has old Pictures from the Rainbow Club?
ReplyDeleteI have to say that Darmstadt was a major part of my life due to the fact that i live there for so many years and have seen how vanished.
ReplyDeleteHad some great times in Darmstadt, I actually worked in the officers club.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at CFK from '59-61 while attached to the 6981st RGM.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at Cambrai from 5/76-6/77 I was the driver for General Fye,CG 32d AADCOM. I have so many great memories from there.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed with the 440th as a WAC from Dec 73 to July 74, but stayed on through Mar 77 with my soldier husband. We lived in Eberstadt then Greishiem until we got quarters at Lincoln Village. We never bought a car and I dearly loved walking, riding the Strauss or bicycling everywhere. Fond memories. What a beautiful place on God's green earth. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOn Facebook there a a couple of Pages dedicated to Cabrai-Fritsch Kaserne (CFK) and I created one several years ago for 440th Sig Bn. Good info as you may compare notes, see other photos and chat with other folks stationed there. There is at least one photo from the 1940's of the post office when it was still under Nazi reign.

Brings back a lot of memories. I worked in the TADS compound for the 232nd signal. Had a lot of fun there. I did 2 tours at CFK.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at CFK from 1953 to 1957.
Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI was here from 82 to 87 and it was a great experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.
ReplyDeleteI was with the 7th evac from 72 to 74.
ReplyDeleteHi all!
ReplyDeleteStationed from Sep 83 to Aug 86 at CFK with 4th Plt 421st Air Ambulance Co. Very memorable times. Love the country and it's hospitality!
ReplyDeleteI was stationed at CFK from 1963 until 1966. The happiest days of my life we here and in Darmstadt. It saddens me to see CFK now.
ReplyDeleteI was at HHB 32nd ADCOM '76-'79 working in supply. My married name was Carol Dufrane. I loved my time there and love the pics. Will try to get on the Facebook "I was on Cambrai" under Carol Pajak.Would love to hear from people that where there during that time.
ReplyDeleteThank you for documenting this wonderful place.
ReplyDeleteI spent three of the best years of my life stationed with the 6910th., USAFSS on this base.
While stationed there I had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe.
I also established friendships and memories that have lasted me my lifetime.
I write this with a tears in my eyes knowing that what was will never be again.
I thank the people of Germany for their kindness and cherish memories celebrated with them.

Bob....I was a 292x1on baker...did we know each other? I was there 65 to 67...had a motorcycle....
DeleteI kind of think I remember you....which trick were you on?
DeleteI was with the TADS Unit during the testing phase at the Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne in 1971. We started out with the 7th Signal but eventually was transitioned to the 93rd Signal. I remember the Rod and Gun Club and the NCO Club as well as the powdered eggs we got at breakfast most of the time. But a good tour of duty overall.
ReplyDeletewas there 1959 1960, air force 6911 rgm great time off post in Darmstadt and surrounding villages
ReplyDeleteI was assigned to USMCAD 1978-81. My family and I lived in housing in front of the Chapel. I see the building where we lived in the picture. My wife died 7 years ago. I wish she could see this too. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteme and my family met a young men who was station at cambra Fritsch kaserne in 1962 he spend Christmas with us. his name was tom king he was from Chicago.always wondered what happen to him if you see this send a little note. helga
ReplyDeleteI'm David Burleigh, '81-'82, HHD 11th ADA Sig Bn with LT Liz Clepper running the barracks under Top (can't remember his name). I worked in S1 for SFC Volland. Dumbass Gornto was running the show. My roommates in the barracks were Danny White from Cleveland, and Chuck Martin from Pagosa Springs, CO.
ReplyDeleteI loved Germany, loved Darmstadt, hated the military.
ReplyDeleteIt gave us all an opportunity to experience life away from our families and home towns.
Its sad to see the photos of the place abandoned.
Hi, my name is Christine .
ReplyDeleteI used to go there every weekend to hang out with the GIs ....this was back in the 80's and I'll never forget it. I was that crazy loud mouthed german. Doing the line dance , drinking Beer and just having a blast ! I am of average build, always wore a " vest & cowboy hat " ! I miss all my old buddies. Some were marines and made it a point to look after me. I think I was like 18 then.i wish I could turn back time and got everyone's contact information
as I now reside in the states ( Florida ) .
Perhaps god willing, I'll run into my old friends ;-)
Cheers from Destin, Florida
Christine
ReplyDeleteI was there in 1989-1992 while my ex was stationed there. I ran the Stars and Stripes bookstore. I remember the lady who ran the barbershop, Carol, who was from England. Good times!! Thanks for the pictures, I'm sad to see it abandoned.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed with the 93rd sig bat co c and d 1967 until September 1968 at Cambrai.I have a lot of good memories and as time passes I find that I miss my buddies and the times that we had. I was sad to see the place closed and looking so deserted. The pictures and videos did bring back memories.
ReplyDeleteRe: Camp Eschborn. Cheers --
ReplyDeletePosting this to see if anyone has any info On Bobby E Cooper (Robert) he was there from 60-62 in Co. D 440th Signal apo 34. Been looking for info on him for a few days.
