  1. I was stationed in Darmstadt from 1968 through 1972; at Cambrai Fritsch Kaserne with the USAF Security Service. I had great friends at Ernst Ludwig Kaserne, people like Jim Bouchard who left too soon after my arrival. Jim and his friend Tom and his Joe and Dahl White were wonderful souls who will have a place in my heart forever. I was on ELK many times and have nothing but fond memories.

  5. I am going through my dad's air force stuff and we lived in K-Town Germany until 1974. He was stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base. His name was Duayne G. Baker. I have a 3L beer stein that says HHB32d AADCOM 1973. Can anyone tell me about it? Thanks

  7. Regarding the posting of 30 OCT 09 which says, in part, "I have a 3L beer stein that says HHB32d AADCOM 1973. Can anyone tell me about it? Thanks" I believe that this refers to a Hawk Missile unit that moved onto "ELK" in the later '60's. AADCOM was the acronym for Army Air Defense Command. The Hawk unit provided air defense for the 3d Bn, 80th Arty, then a Sergeant Missile unit (tac nuke). The Hawk unit had the funniest St. Bernard dog as a unit mascot. Anyone on ELK at that time would "ROTFLOL" if they remember that dog and the things it did. Also, in very recent years many Kasernes (posts) have been turned back to the German government. A friend who visited about a year or so ago saw the finished product of what you can see on Google Earth, and that is that the site was demolished (including the old underground facility) and homes built. He said that the street where the main gate would have been on ELK is now Anne Frank Strasse.

  16. Was stationed there in 1970 and worked as a tech in support of 32AADCOM which had a HQ company stationed in the same kaserne. Did a lot of traveling throughout the northern part of Germany (to radio relay and terminal sites plus calls to missile battery units) during the 8-1/2 months I was there. Very good food that was cheap and outstanding beer that was cheap. Rummel beer was 25 cents in the NCO club and 2 or 3 of them guaranteed a good nights sleep. Lots of funny stories that showed just how stupid certain people in the Army were (from privates to officers).

  23. My father was stationed in Darmstadt, Santa Barbara Village, from 1970-1973. He retired as a Lt. Col but he was a Major when we were there. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with Santa Barbara Village? Also, was the Ernst Ludwig Kaserne the big base that was near the Santa Barb Village? My father was Air Def Art and worked with the Hawk missile.
    Thanks

  39. Hello,
My name is Arnaldo Boza ( Nickname "Tito"). I was at ELK from 1991 - 1992 with the 94th Engineers. My Squad leader was Alex Pastrana ( I call him occasionally). I had several other friends there : Xavier Arriola, Freddie Rosario, PFC DAy and PFC Curry ( Which I would like to contact them). On the day I arrived there I Had reunited with a friend/ neighbor Kevin O'Connell From My Home town of Key West Florida. I had last seen him in Key west Just six months before we were reunited at ELK. I had no clue he had joined the Army.
It is such a small world that we both joined the Army, were assigned to the 94 Engineers, stationed in the same country, same city, same Kaserne, same barracks, same floor and right across from the hallway!.
If there are any fellow soldiers that worked with me please respond.

My cell number is (619) 213-3478 if you ever want to call and shoot the shit with someone from the unit. So for the first few months I was assigned to the motorpool as a gofer. Eventually I wound up in the MADCAP working for Etherdrell Collins & Johnny P. Dates. SGM Polite was also there. One of the smartest men I have ever run into. MSGT Madden was a kindly older guy & I remember him fondly. The only officer I remember was Major Collar, I think he was universally disliked, he didn't get promoted & I heard he wound up as a Sgt.

I was station here from Dec 13, 1991 to Oct 15, 1992. I was assigned to Alpha Company 94th Engineer Battalion. My friends use to call me Speedy. My last name is Gonzalez so the nickname stuck over time. I was part of the Maintenance Platoon. My squad leader was SGT Brian Heiskary, our Platoon Sergeant was SFC Mike McCarthy. I still remember some of the guys from the platoon. Bradley, Bartley, Nobles, Dawan, Rosario which we use to call (big money), Arreola, SGT Washington, SGT Mays, SGT Mecina, Bitter, Faulk, Sthal, Mcdonald. I have very fond memories of these guys and of ELK. The Battalion left to Rose Barracks in 1992. So the only unit left at the Laverne was 10th ADA Bn.
Sad to know the Kaserne has been demolished and turned into apartments of some type.

  60. Hello Everyone. I was stationed at ELK Early 1964-Summer 1966. 1/26th, then 3/80th. I ended up in the HHB Finance Section under CWO Paul C. DePriest, then CWO Winter. Summer of 1966, as a PFC, married a beautiful young German lady from Griesheim (Gerda) in the Cambrai Chapel. We just had our 48th Wedding Anniversary here in San Diego, CA. We travel back to Darmstadt and Griesheim about every 2 years. Left AD as a SP5. Break in service. Direct Commission in the Army Medical Service Corps. Back to Germany in '74 (Mannheim, Heidelberg, Bad Kreuznach in 8th Med Bn, 8th ID). Actually worked out of the BK Hospital where Gerda's grandfather was a German Army Medic in WWII. In 1993 - 1995 went back again to 5th SIGCOM/7th MEDCOM Heidelberg (dual hatted). Helped plan and also complete the initial closings of Berlin (Medical and Signal units), and other Army Hospitals/Clinics throughout Germany. The Germans wouldn't take back the 97th General Hosp in Frankfurt and it's now used as US Government Offices. I retired (30 years AD) as a Colonel (who would have thunk it) in summer 1998, but haven't retired from work or life. Most recent trip was 2 years ago (2012). We are members of the Griesheim Stadt's Museum. Everything's closed now pretty much throughout Germany and sitting empty. BK was turned into German housing a few years ago. However, Griesheim & Darmstadt still look pretty much the same. Gerda had her 65th birthday last month and family flew in from Germany for the celebration. It's a big birthday event in Germany, while here it's just a step into Medicare. Had a great time. BTW, we stayed at the new hotel in Garmisch for 1 week on our last trip. It's great and all in USD. Even with the dollar at an all time low, it's still cheaper to take a vacation in Germany (excluding air fare) than here in the USA. Another BTW, most everything military has moved to Wiesbaden now (the base is huge and modern). Also Stuttgart is build up. From both a military perspective and personal, considering the state of world events, we should not be downsizing anywhere, we should actually be upsizing our military show of force, but enough of that. End note: if you can take a trip to Darmstadt and Griesheim you won't be disappointed, but pleasantly surprised. And, I still belong to the 3/80th contact group. It covers assignments to BK of many years. Anyone interested just post it in this blog with an email address. v/r, dan

The division was in shambles because the old timers had been sent home and we and the new replacements were not doing training because we were too busy with occupation duties. It is a good thing the US didn't take Patton,s advice and try to go on to Moscow.

  70. Hi to all who were ever stationed on ELK (Earnst Ludwig Kasere) over the years. I was stationed there from October 1974 to November 1977 (barracks was near the theater, A Company, 94th Engineers). I met, made and lost close friends to drugs, fatal accidents, bad conduct discharges, ETS and PCS. The military was changing then less then 10 years from Viet Nam and entering the All volunteer Army. Through all the ups and downs some of my fawn est memories will forever remain with me. Such fast pitch softball games, the Turkey Bowl (enlisted played Football with pads against the N CO’s, FTX, the snack bar and the Keller under the Mess Hall. The US Flag standing in the center of the Kakerne, the gym were we had some furious basketball games. I would like to hear from them and know how they are doing. My first CO was Cpt. Birmingham “ Big B” he was a no nonsense commander.

We had lots of character (friends) back them, we were given nick names like Scooby-Doo, Big and Little Jack [short for Jackson], Fat Fanny, Gatewood, Blain, Tiny, Sgt Fuller, Chief Gechman who ripped out the dashboard of his car, George Butler, and Porch whom I was with when his daughter was born at 97 General Hospital.

I miss them all. As a young soldier driving a 2 ½ downtown Frankfort and Darmstadt, walking all over the city, Greisheim our shop was located there, BBQ on the Rein River and being shuttled to Kelly Barrack for chow. We did most if not all of our shopping at the PX on Cambrai Fritsch Kaserne. We caught the shuttle bus to walked through the woods and the housing area. There were a lot of Guest Housing, Pizza Places.

It was a long time ago and I hope someone from that era who remembers me reads this and contact me through Face book or reply here.

  73. Wow, memories. I grew up in Darmstadt and eventually had to find out what the "GI's" were all about. I adventually married one had children and moved to the states, Fort Riley, KS. Although the marriage didn't last we have two wonderful children and now I'm a grandma living in the beautiful state of Minnesota My life dreams where fullfilled. I do think back to the old times often, what happend to all the soldiers and families I used to know. Life happens fast. God bless you all.

  74. Heike,
Thank you for those precious reflections. I was at Ernst Ludwig Kaserne a VERY LONG TIME AGO! It was during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). Many fond memories, especially the kindness of the German people. 80. Hello Steven,

I arrived at the Battalion on Friday December 13, 1991, somewhere around 1800 hours. I was assigned to the Maintenance Platoon. I lived in room 119 within Alpha Company barracks right next to our Motor Pool. My room mates at the time of my arrival were PFC James Sthal and SPC Folk. His first name I don't remember anymore. My Squad Leader was SGT Brian Heiskary which I still keep in touch through Facebook.

The guys ended up calling me "Speedy," because my last name is Gonzalez. I was with Aco until July of 1992 at which point I was transferred over to HSC DSU PLatoon and was with them until my DEROS in November of 1993.

When I was in ALPHA Company I use to hang out with Sthal, Folk, Nobles, Peter, Bradley, Cox, Bear, Bitner, Jones, Dawan, Bartley, Lary, and the rest of the guys I don't remember their names but can only picture their faces now.

In HSC I hung out with Nobles, Dawan, Bartley, and Kathy.

Have very good memories of my time in the Army, Germany and of Darmstadt. Such a good and awesome period of time in my life. I have and will carry these memories with me forever.

Hit me up when ever you have time. My cell is (619)213-3478.

Take care and I'll see you around.
    Sincerely,
    Carlos A. Gonzalez.

  84. Came to ELK when D-293rd in Baumholder was transferred with the 1976 push for more combat power east of the Rhine, to become D-94th, commanded by CPT Don Wilson. A neat installation and a damn fine unit. Great memories, thanks to being with so many wonderful people doing top-rate work, never mind being cold, tired, wet, and hungry enough during the work. The German Oldenwald weather often sucked.
