These are great photos of the Cambrai, the US Air Force was a big part of this Darmstadt installation. It is a bit scarey to think of the empty state of these places that held so much activity over so many years. So many lives touching, friendships made, bonds cemented both between Airmen and Soldiers but between all and the German nationals. Sweet memories. Frankenstein's castle is near this installation, as well as, what we called, Rapunzel's tower in the Odenwald. Awesome stuff and great work, really good photos. Thanks you.

Indeed, it's pretty depressing seeing all this places empty. Same for Lincoln Village, which I am planning to visit soon.

Actually, what impressed me the most were the silent playgrounds all over the recently closed housing areas I've visited (St. Barbara, Bad Nauheim, Roman Way, Langen, Cardwell Village and many, many other).

You feel indeed the emptiness when kid's noise is gone.

To answer the question about Hanau, yes, I am planning to take a tour of all former installations there.

Will take, though, some time until I am able to upload pictures of Hanau, as I promised my readers I will complete the Frankfurt housing area gallery first.

Thank you for you patience and I'm looking forward for you to come back. Comments and suggestions are welcome anytime.

I took Pics of Cambrai too in Feb. this year. The Main Gate was closed and the took away the Cambrai Sign at the Entrance already. I realized the Silence too, unbelievable....it brought tears to my Eyes to see this Dead Place / Ghost Town. I was happy to attend the Bowling Alley closing last Year July. Let me know if you need more pics.....i got some

I would mail you some, hit me up.

What a great job you're doing putting these photos on the web for everyone to see. It is so sad to see these military communities empty now. I lived in Hanau in the 1970s. Would love to see photos of Pioneer again. Keep up all the good work you're doing, all us ex military and army brats really appreciate it. Thanks from an army brat.

I met some of the most amazing people - both military and local - and made lifelong friends here - even MET MY WONDERFUL WIFE HERE <3!

I was stationed at Camrbai form 87-90. I visited there later in 99, but to see the photos and the emptiness were more emotional than I would have imagined.

I met my best friend ever while serving in HHC 11th Sig. What a great time we had at the bowling alley and who could ever forget the drunken times we spent at the Rainbow club. While there I couldnt wait to get home, I would never have thought how much I'd like to go back and spend some time with great soldiers that were in 11th Sig with me.

A peter stain Canbrai!

I remember going to that church! How nice to see it again if only in a picture! I was young but I loved Germany and was very sad when we had to leave. Some day I am coming back!

Argh.... more memories. lol. The Rainbow Club on a Friday.... Never missed it.
It was the place to go for me after Aschaffenburg closed up. BTW - the Bavarian NCO Club and the Gatsby's were "da bomb". Wish I could turn back time.
I hope that you will one day be able to post piccies from some or even all Aschaffenburg Barracks. Would make my day for real!
Thank you for all your work and effort, it's highly appreciated!

Thank you for posting these pics! I was stationed there 96-99 when the Rainbow Club was the spot, especially if you liked to fight. They had "Smugglers" and Black Sounds. Soldiers would shop in the Luiseplatz or hit up Frankfurt for the "poof houses." I miss getting my shot of Ramozotti and lasagne to-go at the little Italian restaurant by the back gate. Remember the Schwimmbad parties or the Deutsches+ Amerikaniches fest? I truly enjoyed Darmstadt.

The last Post is pretty funny :) Yep, the Pizza Place was open up to the very End.....almost all Soldiers i knew loved to hang out there. Smugglers tough closed a long time ago. I´m still looking for People/Soldiers who have Pictures of Smugglers or Rainbow Parties.....hit me up: skyholgi@gmx.de

Thanks
Holger

PS: I just got a Mail from Charlie Wilson, who was living on Cambrai when he was 6 Years Old. I´m gonna sent him some Pics.

And yes, this Site here is amazing and i´m not even glad to see all the Pics and Memories, but Soldiers coming here, posting their Comments and Memories too! This is a good way to use the Internet these Days, without it....there would be no such thing like this great Blog !

I was stationed at Cambrai-Fritsch from 1989 until 1992. Those photos brought back some long forgotten memories. I never thought to take photos of the Kaserne while I was there - too busy checking out all the other attractions.

I must say that I've got a lump in my throat.

Thanks for the memories.

I was stationed at CFK 1969-1971 with the 93rd Signal BN. Sorry to see the place closed down. Many happy memories, I remember the tower behind the Kasern, long summer walks in the woods back there and we would actually walk all the way up to Frankenstein's castle.

As for life in the Army, the 93rd spent nearly all the time in the field, we never passed a single IG while I was there. I heard the BN commander later was removed after a nervous breakdown.

This is a nice site! Going to have to look around and remember the old Cold Warrior days.

I was posted to Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne 1954 - 1957 USAF 2nd Radio Squadron. Lived in top floor of barracks with Tower on East side of Parade ground. Our unit also occupied the 2nd barracks to the south and the HQ Building and Mess Hall on the North side. V Corp Army communicatins unit was on the West of the square. Motor pool was on the South. I have many photos inside the barracks and in the Parade Square which seems to be a parking lot now. We were a heavily armed NSA Intelligence gathering squadron with our operations out west of the city. Very much liked Darmstadt, Frankfurt people during these reconstruction days. Have photos of Darmstadt then also. I will post some if I can get some e-mail addresses. ><>

I was there from 91-93. I worked at the Insurance Company outside the Gate of CFK. My husband worked on Kelley Kaserne. These were the best of times. I remember the Rainbow Club. I even spent time at the Rod and Gun Club. I actually lived in Weiderstadt during this time. I am planning on going back sometime.

God, this breaks my heart. I was a gen. mech. with 440th Sig Bn at CFK from '94 to '97. We lived in Lincoln Village and my son attended school there (my daughter was too young still). I had good times and bad times and couldn't wait to leave. But I have missed it. I kept a map of Darmstadt posted on my wall for several years and would look at it, point out places for my kids. We'd remember riding the 'strasse, walking up the hill along the wooded path to go to Sight and Sound or the PX. On the weekend I'd get together with my friends and hit the Rainbow Club for line dancing. My favorite doner kebab place was a ten minute walk from home. For special occasions we'd all go walking into Luisenplatz, and stop on the way back at that little underground Mexican restaurant. Can't believe it's all gone.

I was stationed at Ramstein 64-66 with the 2874th GEEIA and was TDY to the Darmstadt-Greisheim area- installing antennas - we were housed at Cafe Schneider in Darmstadt. Every day we spent some time at Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne. Met Beseball Hall of Famer Sam Rice's daughter, Christine, there -she worked at the Service Club. The pics bring back so many wonderful memories and evoke some strong emotions. Thanks you so much. I hope to return to Germany soon to visit the locations where our work took us. My father was the chaplain at the Community church in Darmstadt-Cambrai-Fritch during the middle eighties. We had a great time living in such a tight-nit community. We lived in Santa Barbara and I attended school out side of Darmstadt. I sure miss riding the train into town and down into Ebersdadt and Phundestadt to the pools.

I lived in Lincoln Village from 72-76 and remember walking up to Cambrai for the cheap movies, good pizza, i was in my teens but will never forget wanting to go home when i first arrived and my parents forcing me on the plane to go back home, i had friends in not only Lincoln Village but also Jefferson Village and Santa Barbara Village where all the Officer housing was, I played many years for the Darmstadt Trojans Basketball team in the Cambrai gym and also in the Kelly Barracks gym, we travelled all over Germany, my fondest place was playing in the Bubble gym in Fulda, I was with the AYA in Lincoln Village and they kept us busy in sports, i remember going to the pool in Eberstatt which had a 10 meter platform with a window cafe below and we used to terrorize the people eating watching us in the pool, i remember the four fields in Lincoln Village and getting in fights witht he German boys protecting our turf and raiding the berry bushes on the outer territories of the four fields. My football and Basketball coach was an MPI who made sure we were protected if we got out of hand, he was the best, my dad worked for Stars and Stripes in Greisheim and we had all the benefits of a miltary family which allowed us to live in Lincoln Village, we used to go to Ramstein for easter and Thanksgiving since they had the best spread but always worried the bader meinhoff gang would blow it up which they were succesfull days after we were there one time, it was a little dangerous at that time being the cold war and german civilians sick of all the us military all over, i remember ice skating at rhein mein outside during christmas, i remember living at the Atlas Hotel until our Lincoln Village unit opened up, my best friends dad worked at USAMPOR The US army Maintenance plant in Ober Ramstadt, he used to let us weld our bikes. sorry im just firing memories obviusly fresh still after 34 years, i will give more later, how sad to see it empty. my mom would invite the single soldiers over for christmas and thanksgiving and make them homemade meals they were very happy and always nice.i miss it.

I can't say thank you enough. I lived in Lincoln Village from 93-95.. we moved there after closing Stuttgart down. I was heartbroken to leave Germany.. it was one of what sadly, was very few truly happy times I've had..
At 36, I am not old, but I am disabled and I look back, and I think of how much I took for granted. I am divorced now from my then husband, but I can honestly say, I wish I could revisit that time again. We were poor, as all jr enlisted are, but we were happy. I don't miss him, but I miss Germany, and probably, more than anything, the innocence of being a young Army wife in a place of safety. I feel the same way when I watch "Army Wives"... the military is an amazing mini-society, where you know that others get you, and what's going on in your world, kind of automatically.
Sadly, my divorce was not friendly and my ex refused to give me my pictures of our life there.. So thank you. You are giving me back something I lost, even though I am in tears having just learned that it's all closed. Somehow, it wasn't so sad when I thought people still lived their lives there.. now I just feel... old.
But thank you, it's bittersweet.. rather appropriate I guess..

I was stationed at CFK in 1971 in the 7th Evac Hospital. I had a 1953 BMW motorcycle and really enjoyed riding all over, at least when it was warm enough. I was there for the "Darmstadt 52" drama and loved to go to the "Happy Cat" club and the Jugenstil museum. I even made a few trips to the "Underground", a German club in a cellar downtown. My friend had an apartment in Eberstadt and we would all go there and hang out on the weekends. Great memories.

Anonymous said...

Underground? No stranger to that place either. I knew so folks in the 7th Evac and possibly your friend in Eiberstadt. I owned a BSA 441 in 70-71 and have been riding BMW's for years. I bet we met back in the day, did you know Blade or Tree? Small world?

I rememebr attending Mata's funeral. There from Jan 99 to Mar01. Never knew the guy as I was in the barracks next door. I met my wife there. i was in B440th, was 1st Sgt Quintero's driver as well as thetwo Cptns. Both of them at some point. i remember the Thousand Pardons, the Halloween runs, the Frankenstein runs where we would do all the signing up so the rest of the battalion could do the run while we had the weekend off to do our own thing. I remember chewing out some Sgt (named Clarence) at the Robin Hood pizza place because he screwed up my order and then my platoon backed me up by all of us ordering ther same thing until he told us the pizza place was closed at like 3 in the afternoon. I remember when they finally opened the taco Bell and everyone showed up for free food, "Oh, yeah, I'm with the last guy, gimme 10 tacos and a bean burrito and a large drink!"
I remember when most of the post went to Poland and all the containers for the upper officers had fidelio on the sides of their gear because some goof off had just seen eyes wide shut so it became the public password joke.
So many nights spent waiting in the motorpool for ComSec to be turned in. So many nights spent waiting in line for armory checkin! Makes me wanna go back sometimes.

I was stationed at CFK from '59-61 while attached to the 6981st RGM. These were 2 of the best years of my life and an eye-opener for a wet-behind-the-ears twenty-one-year-old airman. Because we reported directly to the Air Force Security Service, we were able to get 4 day passes every sixteen days. Consequently, we were able to travel to Holland, France, Austria, and Switzerland. What an experience!

Hi all! My dad was assigned to the 22nd in 2004 when I was 6, and around a half of a year later, he was transferred to the 440th, I think he was in the S6. We lived 8km away in Rossdorf, as there was no on-base housing. I went to Darmstadt Elementary 06-07 for third grade, and we left in 07 shortly before the 440th was discharged. I'm trying to start a page on Twitter for all you Darmstadt Elementary alumni out there. I hope to make it soon.

I'm David Burleigh, '81-'82, HHD 11th ADA Sig Bn with LT Liz Clepper running the barracks under Top (can't remember his name). I worked in S1 for SFC Volland. Dumbass Gornto was running the show. My roommates in the barracks were Danny White from Cleveland, and Chuck Martin from Pagosa Springs, CO.

I loved Germany, loved Darmstadt, hated the military. Not one real brain in the bunch. Any time you have an organization that promotes people into positions of authority that can't conjugate their forms of 'be' properly; I have an issue with that.

Any time you have an adult in his or her 40's, that being enlisted, catering to the needs of some ignorant 20-something, because they have bars; I have an issue with that.

Even to this day, I have yet to meet anyone with an IQ even approaching 145, let alone the 4th standard deviation. It's pathetic. Idiots in the White House, commanding idiots in the military. I weep for this country.

Anyway, if White or Martin, or anyone that remembers me wants to find me, the most reliable incomex way to hotmail find me is through that. It is sad to see CFK deprecated.

Was a crypto repairman in support of the GTE team fielding the AN/TYC-39 tactical telephone switch and the DSTE equipment that was used for integration. Had some great times at CF and will never forget the guys and gals I worked with, am heartbroken that they are just letting it sit and decay.
